On November 14, St. Paul Preparatory’s Model United Nations club participated in the MUN State High School Conference held at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

In the Model United Nations program, students assume the roles of UN ambassadors from member states in order to discuss and debate current world issues. November’s MUN state conference brought high schools together to address global health and poverty. As we waited to begin, some of our students were anxious, others were eager, and anticipation was high as we entered the ballroom and   took our seats for the opening ceremony.

For this state conference, our topic was Sustainable Development and students worked to create solutions to help combat global warming and promote sustainable development worldwide. Sub-topics like water purification and poverty were also addressed by association.

Our students represented France, Ecuador, the United Arab Emirates, China, and New Zealand. While our delegates were actively involved in the composition of a number of resolutions, one of those resolutions was passed through the General Assembly – a great accomplishment as less than half of the resolutions managed to pass in this committee of more than 100 students.

Now that  we have completed our first 2013-14 conference will begin preparing for our next conference in January. Hosted at Edina High School, this conference will address issues involving the rights of indigenous people across the globe and will provide our students with an opportunity to practice their public speaking skills.

Our students are working to master more persuasive negotiation methods and improve their fluency and ease when speaking in front of a large audience. Furthermore, we hope to use our own cultural immersion experiences to promote cultural relativism in our dealings in the conference as well as among the American students who attend this conference.

SPP students, now is great time to join Model United Nations Club! Stop by, if you are interested.
