A German New Year’s Eve

“Happy New Year! My favorite New Year’s Eve tradition here in Germany is to light a sugar cone that is soaked in a beverage made with sugarcane, which then melts and drops into a winter punch called “Glühwein.” It is a perfect drink that keeps your hands warm and is fun to watch.”

Alumni Update: Duy Ha, Vietnam

Class of 2010 alumnus, Duy Ha, was awarded a $10,000 Davis Scholar for Peace Grant to do a peace project about rainforest education in Vietnam in the summer of 2013. He is pictured below with former Social Studies teacher, Ms. Spurgeon.

Students competing for the grant submit project proposals that “promote peace and address the root causes of conflict.” Duy received funding for his project which attempts to correct the market failures of inefficient use of natural resources, specifically the rainforest, in Vietnam. The project will educate around 1,000 youths in Vietnam about the importance of the rainforest and appreciation for nature. Click here to read Duy’s project proposal.

Duy is currently a junior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
